Miss World SA Romanda Hombir: Overcoming Endometriosis & Fighting for Equal Healthcare (2026)

Romanda Hombir, the newly crowned Miss World South Africa 2026, is not just a beauty queen but a beacon of strength and advocacy. Her journey to the crown has been a testament to her resilience and determination, especially in the face of her personal struggles with endometriosis and polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).

Hombir's story is a powerful reminder that beauty and strength can coexist, and that personal challenges can be transformed into catalysts for positive change. Her road to the pageant was not without obstacles, but her unwavering spirit and dedication to a greater cause have propelled her forward.

A Personal Battle with Endometriosis

Hombir's diagnosis of endometriosis and PMOS almost became a barrier to her dream of representing South African women. She shares her struggles, emphasizing the societal pressures that can make those with health issues feel inadequate. However, her journey has been a transformative one, teaching her the importance of self-worth and resilience.

"I faced moments of doubt, wondering if my health issues would allow me to represent women with dignity. But my journey has empowered me, showing that anything is possible, even when faced with limitations. I hope my resilience inspires other women to believe in themselves," she says.

A Mission for Healthcare Equity

Hombir's passion for healthcare and her desire to make a difference stem from her experiences as an audiologist in government clinics. She witnessed the stark disparity in healthcare access, especially for Black communities, and this fueled her mission. With only one audiologist for every 200,000 people in South Africa, the need for change is evident.

"Working in government clinics, I saw the immense need for better healthcare. People struggle to afford basic necessities, and health care is often a luxury. This realization gave me the courage to take action and create a platform to help more people," she explains.

The Caring Purpose Foundation

Hombir's commitment to healthcare equity led her to establish the Caring Purpose Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health, literacy, nutrition, and women's health education. The foundation has already assisted 770 individuals, but Hombir acknowledges that this is just a drop in the ocean for a country with such vast healthcare disparities.

"Our foundation has grown significantly, but the need is immense. With only one audiologist for every 200,000 people, we have a long way to go. However, we're bringing attention to these issues and making a difference, one step at a time," she says.

A Symbol of Hope and Resilience

Romanda Hombir's journey from Miss World South Africa to a champion of healthcare equity is a testament to the power of personal struggles becoming catalysts for positive change. Her story inspires not only women facing health challenges but also those striving for a more equitable and accessible healthcare system in South Africa.

As she prepares for the Miss World pageant in Vietnam, Hombir carries with her the weight of her mission, using her platform to advocate for change. Her story is a reminder that true beauty lies not only in the crown but also in the strength and courage to fight for a better future.
